The ability of duplex steel to withstand corrosion is attributed to the roughly equal combination of ferritic and austenitic components it has. However, in the process of forging or hot forming flanges, this balance can go beyond the specified permissible limits without being mentioned in the analysis report. Duplex fittings and flanges therefore need the phase balance checked, not assumed, which is why ferrite measurement appears on well-written GCC specifications for offshore and seawater service. The grades here cover seawater, produced water and sour process duty across Oman. The parent range is on the pipe fittings and flanges hub.
Duplex Grades Supplied as Fittings and Flanges
| Grade | UNS | Fitting standard | Flange standard | PREN, approximate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Duplex 2205 | S31803 / S32205 | ASTM A815 WP31803, WPS32205 | ASTM A182 F51, F60 | 34 to 38 |
Super duplex 2507 | S32750 | ASTM A815 WPS32750 | ASTM A182 F53 | Above 40 |
Super duplex Zeron style | S32760 | ASTM A815 WPS32760 | ASTM A182 F55 | Above 40 |
Lean duplex 2304 | S32304 | ASTM A815 WPS32304 | ASTM A182 F60 family | Around 25 |
PREN is the pitting resistance equivalent number, calculated as percentage chromium plus 3.3 times percentage molybdenum plus 16 times percentage nitrogen. A grade qualifies as super duplex at PREN 40 and above. Matching pipe is on the duplex and super duplex pipes and tubes hub.
Phase Balance: the Property That Decides Acceptance
Duplex works because ferrite gives strength and chloride cracking resistance while austenite gives toughness and general corrosion resistance. The target is close to equal. Two things disturb it on fittings and flanges.
Hot forming and forging temperature. Work the material too hot and ferrite grows at the expense of austenite; cool too slowly from the solution annealing temperature and intermetallic phases form. Either way the finished item is not the alloy that was ordered.
Sigma phase. Hold duplex, and super duplex especially, in the band around 600 to 950 degrees C and sigma phase precipitates. It is hard, brittle, and takes chromium and molybdenum out of the surrounding metal, so it damages toughness and corrosion resistance at the same time. Super duplex is more susceptible than 2205 because it carries more chromium and molybdenum to begin with.
The controls that answer both are solution annealing followed by a rapid water quench, ferrite content measurement on the finished item, and where the service justifies it, a corrosion test to ASTM G48 Method A on a sample from the production batch. State on the order which of these you require.
Seawater, Produced Water and Sour Service
Chloride pitting and crevice corrosion are what duplex is bought to resist, and crevices are precisely what a gasketed flange joint creates. Grade selection follows the temperature as much as the chloride level: 2205 handles seawater at moderate temperature, while warm or chlorinated seawater pushes the choice to a super duplex grade.
For sour service, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Part 3 sets environmental limits for duplex stainless steels covering hydrogen sulphide partial pressure, chloride content and temperature, and applies a hardness limit. The limits differ between standard duplex and super duplex. Send the service conditions and the acceptable grade can be confirmed against the standard.
Welding and Fabrication Notes
Duplex welding is a phase balance problem as much as a joint problem. Heat input has to stay inside a window: too low and the weld metal solidifies too ferritic, too high and the heat affected zone spends too long in the precipitation range. Nitrogen in the shielding gas helps hold austenite in the weld metal. Autogenous welds without filler usually end up too ferritic, so filler with raised nickel content is the normal route. Where a GCC operator specification calls for weld procedure qualification with ferrite checks and corrosion testing, the same logic is being applied to the joint that the mill applied to the fitting.

What to send for a quotation:
item type, material grade and standard, size, pressure class, facing, schedule or wall, quantity, testing, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.
Mill Certificates and Verification of duplex fittings and flanges
EN 10204 3.1 certificates are supplied as standard, with EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. The paperwork should record the governing standard and grade, heat number, heat treatment, the ferrite content, and the corrosion test result where one is ordered and tensile results, and should be traceable item by item to the stamping. Specify PMI where more than one grade passes through the same yard. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.
Packing and Storage Before Installation
Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Machined faces, grooves and bevels are protected for sea freight and for storage in Gulf conditions: high ambient heat, humidity, blown sand and coastal chlorides all act on exposed metal. Keep stainless, duplex and nickel items physically separated from carbon steel handling equipment, because embedded iron particles rust and can start pitting on an otherwise sound surface.

Duplex Fittings and Flanges FAQ
Why is ferrite content measured on duplex fittings?
Because hot forming and forging can move the ferrite and austenite balance outside the required range, and an item outside that range loses toughness or corrosion resistance without any change in chemistry.
What is the difference between duplex and super duplex?
Super duplex carries more chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, giving a pitting resistance equivalent number of 40 and above against roughly 34 to 38 for 2205, with higher strength.
What is sigma phase and why does it matter?
Sigma is a hard brittle intermetallic that forms when duplex is held around 600 to 950 degrees C. It reduces toughness and depletes chromium and molybdenum locally, so corrosion resistance drops too.
Are duplex flanges acceptable for sour service?
Within limits. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Part 3 sets environmental limits on hydrogen sulphide partial pressure, chloride content and temperature, with a hardness limit applied.
Can duplex fittings be supplied with G48 corrosion testing?
Testing to ASTM G48 Method A can be ordered on the production batch. State the requirement and the acceptance criteria in the RFQ.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the grade, item type, size, class, facing, schedule, quantity, ferrite and corrosion testing requirements, certification, inspection and destination port.
Request a Quote for Duplex Fittings and Flanges
Send the grade, item type, size, class and facing, along with the seawater or sour service conditions. Where ferrite measurement or corrosion testing is required, say so at enquiry stage, because it affects both the source and the lead time.
