Titanium Grade 16 Pipes and Tubes (UNS R52402) with Low Palladium

Grade 16 is the budget version of grade 7. The metallurgy is the same, grade 2 titanium with palladium added, but the palladium is cut to between 0.04 and 0.08%, a fraction of the grade 7 amount. That lowers the price and still gives far better behaviour than grade 2 in mildly reducing acids and tight crevices. It is not meant for the harshest acid duty, and that boundary is the thing to settle before ordering. Titanium grade 16 pipes and tubes to UNS R52402 are supplied across Oman for process, brine and heat exchanger service. Related grades are on the copper nickel and titanium pipes and tubes hub.

Where Titanium Grade 16 Is Used

  • Process lines with mildly reducing acids at moderate temperature
  • Hot brine heat exchangers with gasketed joints
  • Replacement for grade 7 where the duty allows a lower palladium level
  • Desalination and chemical plant service with occasional acid cleaning
  • Equipment where crevice resistance is wanted on a tighter budget

For the strongest reducing acid duty, titanium grade 7 carries more protection. For plain seawater, titanium grade 2 is enough.

Both grades share strength, forming and welding behaviour, so a change from one to the other needs no redesign. The saving is real, but it is worth confirming with the process data that the lower palladium level covers the worst case.

Seawater Performance and Limits

With a lower palladium level than grade 7, grade 16 keeps the film stable in mildly reducing acids and in many hot brine crevices, well beyond what plain grade 2 manages. In seawater at ordinary temperature it behaves like grade 2. Its margin in strong hot reducing acids is smaller than grade 7, so concentration and temperature must be reviewed before it is chosen. Like other commercially pure grades it should not be used in dry chlorine, red fuming nitric acid or hydrofluoric acid. State the fluid, concentration and temperature in the RFQ; requirements are confirmed at quotation.

What to send for a quotation:

grade, standard, seamless or welded, NPS or OD, schedule or wall, length, quantity, finish, fluid, concentration and temperature, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.

Mill Certificates and Verification

Titanium Grade 16 is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. The certificate should record chemistry, heat treatment, tensile properties and any additional testing ordered. Positive material identification is worth specifying wherever several titanium grades are fabricated together, since they look identical. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.

Storage and Contamination Control

Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Material is capped and, where specified, wrapped to protect the surface. Titanium is clean to store, but keep it free of iron contamination from carbon steel tools, slings and grinding dust. Keep grade 16 apart from grade 7 and grade 2, since they look identical and only the heat number and certificate separate them.

Fittings and Related Grades

Titanium grade 16 is used across desalination and water treatment plants, power generation heat exchangers and marine and offshore systems.

Titanium Grade 16 FAQ

How does grade 16 differ from grade 7?

Both contain palladium, but grade 16 has 0.04 to 0.08% against 0.12 to 0.25% for grade 7, so it costs less and has a smaller margin in strong reducing acids.

Is grade 16 stronger than grade 2?

No. Minimum tensile strength is 345 MPa and minimum yield 275 MPa, the same as grade 2 and grade 7.

When is grade 16 enough?

For mildly reducing acids and hot brine crevices where the process data shows the lower palladium level covers the duty.

Can grade 16 replace grade 7?

Where the duty allows. Confirm the worst case concentration and temperature first.

Is there an EN equivalent?

There is no widely used direct EN number. State the ASTM grade and UNS number in the enquiry.

What should I send for a quotation?

Send the UNS number, form, OD, wall, length, quantity, fluid, concentration and temperature, certification and destination port.
