ASTM A213 T2 Half-Chrome Moly Boiler Tubes

Replacing a handful of tubes in a superheater panel raises a question that has little to do with strength: matching the original T2 keeps one welding procedure and one inspection history for the panel, while substituting a different grade doubles both. Paperwork follows metal here. With ½% chromium and ½% molybdenum, ASTM A213 T2 tubes have a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa while still remaining soft enough with a hardness of 163 HBW to allow for bending and expansion. They turn up mostly in repair and replacement work on older boilers across Oman. Other chrome-moly tube grades are on the alloy and chrome-moly pipes and tubes hub.

Where A213 T2 Tubes Are Used

  • Replacement tubes in superheater and reheater panels originally built in T2
  • Economiser and boiler bank repairs
  • Older process heater coils
  • Spares held against a specific boiler design

For new work, ASTM A213 T11 and T12 are specified far more often. The pipe form of T2 is ASTM A335 P2.

Matching or Upgrading a T2 Panel

Consideration

Staying with T2

Substituting T11 or T12

Welding procedures

One qualified procedure for the panel

A dissimilar-metal procedure is needed for each joint to existing T2

Inspection records

One material, one history

Two materials to track through future outages

Availability

T2 is rolled infrequently, so lead time can be long

T11 and T12 are widely available

Performance

Matches the original design

Slightly better oxidation and creep resistance

Where an outage date is fixed and T2 cannot be delivered in time, upgrading is a legitimate route, but it is an engineering change: the substitution, the weld procedures and the records all need owner approval before the tubes are cut. Raising the question at enquiry stage, rather than at the outage, usually decides whether T2 can be rolled in time.

T2 Tubes and Service Environments

T2 is a boiler tube grade, not a sour service material. If H2S exposure is possible, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-2 hardness limits apply to the tube and its welds; the 163 HBW ceiling in A213 already sits well below them. State any sour requirements in the RFQ; they are confirmed at quotation.

What Affects the Price of T2 Tubes

  • OD, wall and cut length
  • Hot finished or cold drawn
  • Bending, end preparation and any special cleaning
  • Quantity and mill minimums
  • Stock availability versus a mill order
  • PMI, hardness and supplementary NDT
  • Small-quantity rolling, which drives both price and lead time
  • Certification (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) and third-party inspection
  • Incoterm and destination port

Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.

What to send for a quotation:

grade, OD, minimum wall, length, quantity, bending details, tests, whether an upgrade grade is acceptable, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.

Certificates, PMI and Inspection

T2 tubes are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. The certificate should show chemistry, heat treatment, tensile and hardness results, flattening and flaring tests and the hydrostatic or electric test record. Because alloy tubes look identical to one another, PMI on receipt is worth specifying. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.

Packing, Marking and Storage

Lead time is confirmed at quotation. T2 tubes are bundled or crated with end caps and rust-preventive coating, and each tube carries the grade marking. On Gulf sites, keep tubes under cover and in grade-marked stacks, since a misplaced alloy tube in a boiler panel is difficult to find once welded in.

Related Tubes and Pipe

T2 tubes are found mainly in older power generation and refinery and petrochemical boilers.

T2 Tube FAQ

What is A213 T2?

A seamless ½Cr-½Mo boiler and superheater tube with 415 MPa minimum tensile, 205 MPa minimum yield and a 163 HBW hardness limit.

Why is T2 difficult to source?

It is rarely specified for new boilers, so mills roll it infrequently. Replacement quantities need planning well before an outage.

Can T11 or T12 replace T2 tubes?

With owner approval, yes, but the joints to existing T2 become dissimilar welds needing qualified procedures, and the panel then contains two materials.

What is the pipe equivalent of T2?

ASTM A335 P2.

Is there an EN equivalent of T2?

There is no close equivalent in EN 10216-2.

What should I send for a T2 quotation?

Send the OD, minimum wall, length, quantity, outage date, whether an upgrade is acceptable, certification, inspection and destination port.

Request a Quote for ASTM A213 T2 Tubes

Send the OD, minimum wall, quantity and outage date. Every enquiry is checked against ASTM A213 before the offer is prepared, so lead time and any upgrade route are settled well before the shutdown.
