Superheater elements are bent to tight radii and welded into headers before they ever see steam, so a tube grade has to survive the shop as well as the furnace, and T11 takes that cold work and welding more easily than the advanced grades while still holding creep strength well above carbon steel. Fabrication shapes the choice. ASTM A213 T11 tubes have a chromium content of 1½% and a molybdenum content of ½% while possessing a tensile strength of 415 MPa and a hardness of 163 HBW that allows them to be used in the bending shop. They are used in boilers and heaters across Oman. The full range is on the alloy and chrome-moly pipes and tubes hub.
Where A213 T11 Tubes Are Used
- Superheater and reheater elements in utility and industrial boilers
- Water-wall tubes in higher-temperature zones
- Economiser and HRSG tube bundles
- Process heater coils in low-sulphur service
- Replacement elements in existing 1¼Cr panels
The closely related ASTM A213 T12 appears in many European-derived specifications; the pipe form of T11 is ASTM A335 P11.
Bending, Welding and Hardness in Superheater Elements
|
Fabrication step |
What matters with T11 |
|---|---|
|
Cold bending to tight radii |
T11's low hardness ceiling of 163 HBW means the tube bends without cracking; tight bends may still need stress relief |
|
Tube-to-header welds |
Preheat is normally required, with PWHT depending on thickness and the governing code |
|
Hardness after PWHT |
Checked to confirm the weld and heat-affected zone are properly tempered |
|
Dissimilar joints |
Welds to carbon steel stubs or to higher-alloy grades need their own qualified procedures |
A boiler element that arrives with hardness at the top of the range, or a bend made cold in tube that was supplied hard, gives trouble later in service. Ordering on minimum wall and confirming hardness on the certificate keeps both the bending shop and the boiler inspector satisfied.
T11 Tubes and Service Environments
T11 is primarily a boiler and heater tube grade. Where H2S exposure is possible, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-2 hardness limits apply to the tube and its welds, and the 163 HBW ceiling sits well below them. State any sour requirements in the RFQ; they are confirmed at quotation.
What Affects the Price of T11 Tubes
- OD, wall and cut length
- Hot finished or cold drawn
- Bending, end preparation and any special cleaning
- Quantity and mill minimums
- Stock availability versus a mill order
- PMI, hardness and supplementary NDT
- Certification (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) and third-party inspection
- Incoterm and destination port
Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
What to send for a quotation:
grade, OD, minimum wall, length, quantity, bending details, tests, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.
Certificates, PMI and Inspection
T11 tubes are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. The certificate should show chemistry, heat treatment, tensile and hardness results, flattening and flaring tests and the hydrostatic or electric test record. Because alloy tubes look identical to one another, PMI on receipt is worth specifying. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.
Packing, Marking and Storage
Lead time is confirmed at quotation. T11 tubes are bundled or crated with end caps and rust-preventive coating, and each tube carries the grade marking. On Gulf sites, keep tubes under cover and in grade-marked stacks, since a misplaced alloy tube in a boiler panel is difficult to find once welded in.
Related Tubes and Pipe

T11 tubes are used across power generation and refinery and petrochemical plants.
T11 Tube FAQ
What is A213 T11?
A seamless 1¼Cr-½Mo boiler, superheater and heat exchanger tube with 415 MPa minimum tensile, 205 MPa minimum yield and a 163 HBW hardness limit.
Why is T11 common in superheaters?
It combines useful creep and oxidation resistance with easy bending and welding, which suits the fabrication of tube elements.
What is the difference between T11 and T12?
T11 has 1.00 to 1.50% chromium and 0.50 to 1.00% silicon; T12 has 0.80 to 1.25% chromium, 0.50% silicon maximum and a higher minimum yield of 220 MPa.
Does T11 need PWHT?
Preheat is normally required, and PWHT depends on thickness and the governing code.
What is the pipe equivalent of T11?
ASTM A335 P11.
What should I send for a T11 quotation?
Send the OD, minimum wall, length, quantity, bending details, tests, certification, inspection and destination port.
