ASTM A213 T92 Tubes for Advanced Steam Conditions

Steam-side oxide grows steadily on the bore of 9% chromium tubes, and when a unit cycles the scale can flake away, collect in the bottom of a bend and choke the tube or travel on to erode turbine blades. The problem starts on the inside surface. Tungsten and boron added to the Grade 91 recipe lift T92 to 440 MPa minimum yield, so panels and elements can run thinner at the highest steam temperatures. It is specified in advanced plants across Oman. Related grades are on the alloy and chrome-moly pipes and tubes hub.

Where A213 T92 Tubes Are Used

  • Superheater and reheater elements in supercritical and ultra-supercritical boilers
  • High-temperature HRSG bundles
  • Outlet legs where T91 would need heavier walls
  • Replacement elements in units designed in Grade 92

For most high-temperature duty, ASTM A213 T91 is more widely available. The pipe form of T92 is ASTM A335 P92.

Steam-Side Oxide and Inner Surface Treatments

Stage

What happens

Consequence

Normal operation

A magnetite and chromium-rich oxide grows on the tube bore

Slight loss of heat transfer, gradual metal temperature rise

Thermal cycling

The oxide and the steel contract at different rates, so scale spalls

Loose scale collects in bends

Blockage

Scale restricts flow in a tube, raising its metal temperature

Local overheating and eventual failure

Carry-over

Scale travels with steam to the turbine

Solid particle erosion of blades and valves

Two measures are common. The first is inner-surface treatment, such as shot peening or a fine-grained inner layer, which slows oxide growth on 9Cr tubes. The second is operating practice, including controlled ramp rates and chemical cleaning during outages. If your specification calls for a treated inner surface, state it in the enquiry, since it must be ordered from the mill rather than added later.

T92 Tubes and Service Environments

T92 is a high-temperature steam grade rather than a sour service material. Where H2S exposure is possible, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-2 limits apply and selection should be reviewed with the operator. State any such requirements in the RFQ; they are confirmed at quotation.

What Affects the Price of T92 Tubes

  • OD, wall and cut length
  • Hot finished or cold drawn
  • Bending, end preparation and any special cleaning
  • Quantity and mill minimums
  • Stock availability versus a mill order
  • PMI, hardness and supplementary NDT
  • Inner surface treatment, where specified
  • Limited mill availability compared with T91
  • Certification (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) and third-party inspection
  • Incoterm and destination port

Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.

What to send for a quotation: grade, OD, minimum wall, length, quantity, bending details, tests, any inner surface treatment and PMI scope, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.

Certificates, PMI and Inspection

T92 tubes are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. The certificate should show chemistry, including tungsten and boron, heat treatment, tensile and hardness results, flattening and flaring tests and the hydrostatic or electric test record. Because alloy tubes look identical to one another, PMI on receipt is worth specifying. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.

Packing, Marking and Storage

Lead time is confirmed at quotation. T92 tubes are bundled or crated with end caps and rust-preventive coating, and each tube carries the grade marking. On Gulf sites, keep tubes under cover and in grade-marked stacks, since a misplaced alloy tube in a boiler panel is difficult to find once welded in.

Related Tubes and Pipe

T92 tubes are used mainly in power generation plants.

T92 Tube FAQ

What is A213 T92?

A seamless 9Cr tube with tungsten and boron additions, with 620 MPa minimum tensile and 440 MPa minimum yield, for the highest steam temperatures.

What is steam-side oxide exfoliation?

Oxide that grows on the tube bore and flakes off during cycling. It can block bends or travel to the turbine and erode blades.

How is T92 told apart from T91?

By tungsten content. A PMI reading of chromium alone cannot separate them, since both are 9% chromium steels.

Does T92 need PWHT?

Yes. Preheat, interpass control and PWHT apply as for T91, with hardness checks afterwards.

What is the pipe equivalent of T92?

ASTM A335 P92.

What should I send for a T92 quotation?

Send the OD, minimum wall, length, quantity, any inner surface treatment, PMI scope, certification, inspection and destination port.

Request a Quote for ASTM A213 T92 Tubes

Send the OD, minimum wall and quantity, with the boiler specification attached. Every enquiry is checked against ASTM A213 before the offer is prepared, so inner surface treatment and grade verification are agreed before rolling.
