A closed valve is a mechanical device that can pass, and permit-to-work procedures across Oman treat it that way, which is why the document that releases a vessel for entry usually calls for a blind flange rather than a valve. Bolt a blind on and the line is shut by metal, not by a seat and a stem. Blind flanges also close spare nozzles, terminate headers and cap lines for hydrotest. In every one of those roles they carry the full bore pressure across an unsupported plate. The range sits on the pipe fittings and flanges hub.
Where Blind Flanges Are Used
- Positive isolation for maintenance, vessel entry and hot work, where a valve alone is not accepted
- Closing spare and future nozzles on vessels, tanks and headers
- Terminating a line at a battery limit or a future tie-in point
- Capping a section for hydrostatic testing before commissioning
- Access points for inspection, cleaning and pigging arrangements
A blind flange is a permanent closure that takes time to remove. Where a line must be isolated and reopened frequently, the usual answer is a spectacle blind or a spade and spacer pair, which swings or slides between two positions without breaking the bolting pattern twice. Those are figure-8 and paddle items rather than B16.5 blind flanges, so state which you need.
Why Thickness Grows Faster Than Diameter
A blind flange has no pipe behind it. The whole bore pressure acts on a flat unsupported disc, and the bending moment that creates rises with the square of the diameter, so blind thickness climbs quickly as size and class go up. Two consequences for buyers:
- A large diameter high class blind is a heavy forging, and lifting arrangements need planning before it arrives on site
- The thicknesses in ASME B16.5 already account for this, so a blind should never be substituted with plate cut to the same outside diameter
Where a blind is drilled and tapped for a vent, drain or instrument connection, say so at enquiry. The tapping has to be allowed for in the design rather than added afterwards.
Sizes, Classes and Facings
| Standard | Scope |
|---|---|
ASME B16.5 | NPS 1/2 to 24, Classes 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500 |
ASME B16.47 Series A | NPS 26 to 60, derived from MSS SP-44 |
ASME B16.47 Series B | NPS 26 to 60, derived from API 605, lighter with smaller bolting |
| Facing | Where it is used |
|---|---|
Raised face (RF) | The default on process and utility piping |
Flat face (FF) | Mating to cast iron or equipment that cannot take an edge load |
Ring type joint (RTJ) | High pressure and pipeline duty, metal ring gasket in a machined groove |
Pressure ratings follow the same ASME B16.5 tables as other flange types. For Material Group 1.1, covering A105 carbon steel, the ratings at 38 degrees C are 19.6 bar for Class 150, 51.1 bar for Class 300 and 102.1 bar for Class 600, falling as temperature rises.
Sizes are supplied to specification. Send the NPS, class, facing, grade and any tapping required.
Isolation Practice in the Gulf
Operators across oil and gas and refinery and petrochemical sites in Oman run isolation standards that specify when a blind is required and how it is recorded. Two points come up repeatedly on procurement.
Grade and class match the line, not the duty. A blind closing a Class 600 line is a Class 600 blind in the line material, even though it is only there during a shutdown.
Blind registers. Where blinds are fitted and removed on a turnaround, each one is logged and tagged. Ordering them with permanent hard stamping and a stated heat number makes that register easier to keep straight.
Sour Service
Under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, a blind flange in a sour line carries the same requirements as every other component: for carbon and low-alloy steel, hardness at or below 22 HRC, controlled chemistry and an accepted heat treatment condition. Because blinds in high classes are thick sections, the heat treatment response through the thickness matters, so hardness testing on the finished forging is commonly specified. State your sour service requirements in the RFQ.
What Moves the Price of blind flanges
- Material grade and alloy content, which carry market surcharges
- Type, size, pressure class and facing
- Matching pipe schedule or fitting wall
- Forged or wrought, and seamless or welded construction
- Testing: hardness, impact testing, NDT, PMI and ferrite checks where they apply
- Quantity against mill or forge minimums
- Certification level (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) and third-party inspection
- Incoterm and destination port
Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
What to send for a quotation:
item type, material grade and standard, size, pressure class, facing, schedule or wall, quantity, testing, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.
Blind Flanges, Certificates, and Inspection
Supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. The certificate should carry the material standard and grade, heat number, heat treatment condition and mechanical results. PMI on receipt is worth specifying wherever grades share a store or a fabrication shop, since a stencil is only paint. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.
Packing, Delivery and Gulf Site Storage
Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Items are packed in crates or bundles, with bevels and machined faces protected. On Gulf laydown yards the two things that cause rework are a damaged sealing face and surface contamination, so keep face protectors on until assembly and store alloy items clear of carbon steel racking, slings and grinding dust.

Blind Flanges FAQ
Is a blind flange the same as a spade or spectacle blind?
No. A blind flange is a B16.5 flange that closes a line end or nozzle. Spades, spacers and spectacle blinds sit between two existing flanges and are designed to be changed over during a shutdown.
Why are blind flanges so much thicker than other flanges?
Because the bore pressure acts on an unsupported flat disc, and the bending moment rises with the square of the diameter. ASME B16.5 sets the thickness accordingly.
Can I use a plate cut to the same diameter instead?
No. A plate cut to the flange outside diameter will not have the thickness or the material condition the standard requires for the class.
Can blind flanges be supplied with a tapped connection?
Yes, for vents, drains or instrument connections, but the tapping must be stated at enquiry so it is allowed for in the design rather than added later.
What class and grade should a blind used for isolation be?
The same class and material as the line it isolates, even when the blind is only in place for the duration of a shutdown.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the NPS, pressure class, facing, material grade, any tapping, quantity, testing, certification, inspection and destination port.
Request a Quote for Blind Flanges
Send the size, class, facing and grade with quantities, and say whether any blind needs a tapped connection. Isolation blinds for turnaround work are quoted with the marking and traceability the blind register needs.
