When Monel metal is subjected to high temperatures, sulphur makes it brittle, yet in the fabrication industry, it is practically impossible to avoid sulphur completely. Indeed, sulpher is carried by cutting fluids, temperature measurement crayons, and much more. A permanent ink marker used to mark heat numbers produces sulpher exactly at the heat spot when the marking occurs. The plate arrives sound and leaves cracked. Monel plates and sheets go into seawater, brine and hydrofluoric acid equipment across Oman and the GCC. The range is on the plates and sheets hub.
Shop Contamination, and How to Avoid It
|
Source |
Risk |
Control |
|---|---|---|
|
Marker pens and paint |
Sulphur and chloride in the pigment or carrier |
Use consumables certified low sulphur and low halide, or mark outside the area to be heated |
|
Temperature indicating crayons |
Sulphur bearing formulations |
Specify low sulphur grades for nickel alloys |
|
Cutting and forming lubricants |
Sulphurised oils are common and effective on steel |
Use sulphur free lubricant, and degrease thoroughly before any heating |
|
Masking tape and adhesive film |
Adhesive residue carries sulphur |
Remove and degrease before welding or heat treatment |
|
Grinding discs and wire brushes |
Carbon steel contamination plus binder sulphur |
Dedicated media never used on carbon steel |
The rule is simple to state and easy to forget: anything that will be on the plate when it gets hot has to be clean, and degreasing before welding or heat treatment is a process step rather than housekeeping.
Sour Service
Under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Part 3, nickel alloys acceptable for sour service are listed with environmental limits on hydrogen sulphide partial pressure, chloride content, temperature and elemental sulphur, and with hardness limits that depend on the alloy and its condition. Sulphides are also the specific contaminant that drives Monel pitting in stagnant seawater, so a service that is both sour and marine needs the two effects assessed together rather than separately. Send the full service envelope with the enquiry.
What Moves the Price of Monel Plates and Sheets
- Material grade and alloy content, which carry market surcharges
- Type, size, pressure class and facing
- Matching pipe schedule or fitting wall
- Forged or wrought, and seamless or welded construction
- Testing: hardness, impact testing, NDT, PMI and ferrite checks where they apply
- Quantity against mill or forge minimums
- Certification level (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) and third-party inspection
- Incoterm and destination port
Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
What to send for a quotation:
item type, material grade and standard, size, pressure class, facing, schedule or wall, quantity, testing, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.
Monel Plates and Sheets: Certificates and Inspection
Supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. The certificate should carry the material standard and grade, heat number, heat treatment condition and mechanical results. PMI on receipt is worth specifying wherever grades share a store or a fabrication shop, since a stencil is only paint. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.
Packing, Delivery and Gulf Site Storage
Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Items are packed in crates or bundles, with bevels and machined faces protected. On Gulf laydown yards the two things that cause rework are a damaged sealing face and surface contamination, so keep face protectors on until assembly and store alloy items clear of carbon steel racking, slings and grinding dust.

Monel Plates and Sheets FAQ
Why does sulphur matter so much with Monel?
Nickel copper alloys are embrittled by sulphur at temperature, and shop consumables such as marker pens, crayons, lubricants and tape adhesives are common sources on material that will later be heated.
What should be done before welding or heat treatment?
Degrease thoroughly and remove all marking, tape and residue from the area that will be heated. It is a process step rather than housekeeping on this alloy.
Why is Monel used for hydrofluoric acid?
Its resistance comes from nickel and copper rather than a chromium oxide film, which hydrofluoric acid would attack, so it is one of the few materials accepted for that duty.
How does Monel behave in stagnant seawater?
Poorly compared with flowing seawater. Sulphides and deposits accumulate against the metal in still conditions and pitting starts, so lay-up practice belongs in the design.
Will Monel protect or corrode adjacent carbon steel?
Monel is noble relative to carbon steel, so the carbon steel corrodes. Fasteners, supports and adjacent components need isolation or a sacrificial arrangement in a marine atmosphere.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the thickness, width and length or cut size, condition, quantity, service conditions including whether the system is chlorinated, certification and destination port.
Request a Quote for Monel Plates and Sheets
Send the thickness and size with the service, including whether the seawater is chlorinated and whether the equipment will stand idle. Where fabrication is in scope, the low sulphur consumable requirement is set out on the offer.
