Pipe arrives as a length with a heat number on it. Plate arrives as a cut piece from something larger, which is why plate marking carries a plate number as well as a heat number, and why a cutting plan matters on anything that will be tested or traced. Lose the identity when the parent plate is cut and the test certificate no longer belongs to the piece in front of you. Plates and sheets are supplied for pressure, structural and corrosion service across Oman and the GCC. Traceability is the first thing to settle, alongside the pipes and tubes range.

Where These Materials Are Used in the GCC
- Pressure vessels, storage tanks and heat exchangers in refinery and petrochemical service
- Structural steelwork, platforms and walkways on oil and gas facilities
- Desalination and water treatment vessels, launders and ducting
- Power generation boiler and ducting components
- Line blanks, spectacle blinds and fabricated items cut from plate
Sour Service and Gulf Storage
Under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, carbon steel plate in sour service needs a hardness limit of 22 HRC with an accepted heat treatment condition, and HIC testing to NACE TM0284 is commonly specified because the rolled microstructure, and the inclusions elongated by rolling, are precisely what HIC exploits. Stainless, duplex and nickel grades fall under Part 3 with environmental limits by alloy.
On Gulf laydown yards, plate stacked flat in the open collects water between the sheets, and that trapped moisture with coastal chloride is worse than open exposure. Store on timber dunnage with a fall, keep stainless and alloy plate clear of carbon steel racking to avoid iron contamination, and leave protective film on polished sheet until fabrication.
Plates and Sheets: Price Factors
Each enquiry is priced on its own, because grade, class and testing scope move the figure more than quantity does. What counts:
- Grade and the alloying elements it carries
- Size, pressure class, facing and bore
- Schedule or wall the item is made to
- Production route, forged or formed from pipe or plate
- Supplementary testing and inspection scope
- Order quantity and availability
- Certificate level and witness requirements
- Delivery terms and port of discharge
Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
What to send for a quotation:
item type, material grade and standard, size, pressure class, facing, schedule or wall, quantity, testing, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.
Certification, Traceability and PMI
Material comes with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. Check that the heat number on the certificate matches the marking on the item itself, and that the heat treatment condition is stated, and the parent plate number alongside the heat number. Positive material identification confirms the grade before anything is welded in. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.
Delivery and Handling
Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Fittings ship bundled or crated with bevel protection; flanges ship with face and ring groove protection, since a scored face leaks whatever the gasket. In coastal Oman, salt deposits build up on anything left in the open, so a rinse and a dry before fitting up is worth the time.

Plates and Sheets FAQ
What is the difference between plate and sheet?
Thickness. The conventional dividing line is 4.76 mm, or 3/16 inch: below it the product is sheet, at or above it the product is plate, with different standards and finishes applying.
Why does plate traceability differ from pipe?
Plate is cut from a larger parent, so marking carries a plate number as well as a heat number. Once a plate is cut, the original marking has to be transferred or the pieces lose their identity.
When should ultrasonic examination be specified?
On pressure vessel plate and anywhere plate will be welded through its thickness. Laminations run parallel to the surface and are invisible from the edge, so they are not found by visual inspection.
Why is HIC testing associated with plate?
Hydrogen induced cracking exploits inclusions elongated by rolling, which is a rolled product problem, so sour service specifications routinely call for HIC testing on plate.
How should plate be stored on a Gulf site?
On timber dunnage with a fall so water does not sit between sheets, away from carbon steel racking for stainless and alloy grades, with protective film left on polished sheet until fabrication.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the grade, thickness, width and length or cut size, condition, finish, quantity, testing requirements, certification, inspection and destination port.
Request a Quote for Plates and Sheets
Send the grade, thickness and size with the testing scope, and say whether material is to be cut before delivery. Where cutting is in scope, the marking transfer method is agreed on the offer so the certificate still belongs to the piece that arrives.
