Stainless Steel 304 Welded Pipe and Tube (TP304, TP304L)

The only difference in the welded 304 pipe is the seam compared to the original material, and it has implications depending on whether the pipe was maximally treated after welding. If so, the seam acts as every other part of the pipe does; if not, the process is not effective. Stainless steel 304 welded pipe covers ASTM A312 and A358 pipe, with A249 or A269 tube, in 304 and low-carbon 304L. Welded construction is what makes larger diameters affordable. It runs through process, utility and water systems across Oman. Seamless options are on the stainless steel pipes and tubes hub.

Where 304 Welded Pipe and Tube Are Used

  • Utility and process lines in large diameters, where seamless would cost far more
  • Water, condensate and demineralised water systems
  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical process lines, often in polished tube
  • Tank connections, vents and drains
  • Structural and architectural applications

For chloride-bearing service, 316 welded pipe and tube is the usual choice, and the seamless grade page is 304/304L.

Which Welded Standard, and What It Means for the Seam

Standard

Product

Seam treatment and testing

ASTM A312 welded

Pipe in standard sizes

Welded without filler, then solution annealed; non-destructive examination as the standard requires

ASTM A358

EFW pipe, mainly larger diameters, supplied in classes

Class defines radiography, heat treatment and testing, and therefore the weld joint efficiency used in design

ASTM A249

Welded tube for boilers and exchangers

Welded and heat treated, with tests suited to tube service

ASTM A778

Unannealed welded pipe

For non-pressure and corrosion service only, not for code pressure piping

Two practical points follow. First, A358 class changes design wall thickness through the joint efficiency factor, so it belongs in the piping specification. Second, unannealed A778 pipe looks similar on the rack but is a different product, and it should never be substituted into a pressure line.

304 or 304L? For welded pipe the low-carbon grade is the safer default, since the seam and any site welds are less likely to sensitise. Dual certified 304/304L material covers both design strength and weld behaviour.

Corrosion at the Seam

In annealed welded pipe the seam corrodes much like the parent metal. Where pipe is welded on site, the heat-affected zone is the vulnerable area, which is why 304L is preferred for fabricated systems and why heat tint should be pickled or ground off rather than left. 304 grades pit in chloride service regardless of the seam, so coastal and chloride-bearing lines call for 316L or higher. State your service conditions in the RFQ; requirements are confirmed at quotation.

304 welded Price Factors

Each enquiry is quoted individually, since alloy surcharges move week to week. What changes the figure:

  • Grade and alloy content
  • Product form, size and wall
  • Finish, cleaning and passivation
  • Supplementary tests and PMI
  • Order quantity against mill minimums
  • Stock or mill order
  • Certificate level and inspection scope
  • Delivery terms and destination port

Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.

What to send for a quotation:

grade, standard, seamless or welded, NPS or OD, schedule or wall, length, quantity, finish, testing, the A358 class if applicable, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.

Certification, PMI and Inspection

Material comes with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. For 304 welded, review the chemistry, annealing details and mechanical results, and specify PMI so each item is verified before it goes into the line. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.

Handling 304 welded on Site

Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Pipe and tube arrive capped, and wrapped where the finish requires it. Store on timber or plastic, not on carbon steel, and use dedicated slings, brushes and grinding discs. Salt-laden coastal air leaves deposits on stored material, so a rinse before welding is worth the time.

Fittings and Related Products

304 welded pipe is used across desalination and water treatment, fertilizer and general plant utilities.

304 Welded Pipe FAQ

Is welded 304 pipe as good as seamless?

For most utility and process service, yes, provided it is solution annealed after welding and the design uses the correct joint efficiency.

What is the difference between A312 welded and A358 pipe?

A312 covers standard welded pipe sizes; A358 covers EFW pipe supplied in classes that define radiography and heat treatment, mainly in larger diameters.

What is A778 pipe?

Unannealed welded pipe for non-pressure and corrosion service. It should not be used in code pressure piping.

Should I specify 304 or 304L for welded systems?

304L is the safer default for fabricated systems, or dual certified 304/304L for design strength as well.

Does the seam corrode faster?

In annealed pipe, not materially. Site welds and heat tint are the greater risk, and should be cleaned properly.

What should I send for a quotation?

Send the grade, standard and class, size, schedule or wall, length, quantity, finish, testing, certification, inspection and destination port.

Request a Quote for Stainless Steel 304 Welded Pipe and Tube

Send the grade, standard, size and quantity, and state the A358 class if your specification uses one. Every enquiry is checked before the offer is prepared, so annealed and unannealed products are never confused.
