The requisition protocol looks at sour service as a procedure, whereas the ISO standard works differently. In ISO 15156, severity is classified along two axes, namely the partial pressure of H2S gas and local pH conditions, producing areas in the aforementioned field. A material acceptable in one region is excluded from another, so a line described only as sour has not been specified. Sour service pipe and fittings for upstream work across Oman and the GCC can only be offered once those two numbers are on the enquiry. The ranges sit under pipes and tubes and pipe fittings and flanges.
How the Standard Defines Severity
Sour service begins at a hydrogen sulphide partial pressure of 0.3 kPa, equivalent to 0.05 psi. Below that threshold the standard does not apply. Above it, severity is a function of two variables together:
|
Variable |
How it is obtained |
Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Hydrogen sulphide partial pressure |
Total system pressure multiplied by the mole fraction of hydrogen sulphide in the gas phase |
The driver for atomic hydrogen entering the steel |
|
In-situ pH |
Calculated from the water chemistry, carbon dioxide content and bicarbonate, at conditions |
Lower pH increases hydrogen uptake substantially |
|
Chloride content |
From the produced water analysis |
Governs corrosion resistant alloy selection under Part 3 |
|
Temperature |
Operating and, critically, the minimum |
Some grades are acceptable only above a stated temperature |
|
Elemental sulphur |
Present or not |
Its presence excludes some alloys outright |
ISO 15156-2 plots partial pressure against pH and divides the field into regions of increasing severity. Carbon and low-alloy steels have requirements that tighten as the region does, and some grades that are acceptable in a mild region are excluded from a severe one.
The practical conclusion: send the partial pressure and the in-situ pH. A requisition saying "sour service per NACE MR0175" names the standard without supplying the inputs the standard needs.
Materials, Certification and Inspection
Every item is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. Where a project runs to an operator or EPC material specification, send it with the enquiry so the offer is made against that document rather than against the governing ASTM or API standard alone. Positive material identification is worth specifying wherever alloy grades pass through the same yard. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.
Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Material is packed for sea freight and for storage in Gulf conditions, with end caps, bevel and face protection, and separation of alloy items from carbon steel handling equipment.

Upstream Sour Service FAQ
At what point does a service become sour?
At a hydrogen sulphide partial pressure of 0.3 kPa, equal to 0.05 psi. Below that threshold ISO 15156 does not apply.
Why is partial pressure alone not enough?
ISO 15156-2 plots partial pressure against in-situ pH and divides the field into regions of increasing severity, so both numbers are needed before a material can be assessed.
What is the difference between Part 2 and Part 3?
Part 2 covers carbon and low-alloy steel as a materials requirement, mainly hardness and condition. Part 3 covers corrosion resistant alloys as an environmental envelope per alloy.
Are SSC and HIC the same requirement?
No. SSC is cracking under stress and is controlled by hardness, so it can be specified on a finished part. HIC depends on steelmaking cleanliness, so it determines where the material is made.
Can HIC testing be added after the material is made?
No. HIC resistance comes from sulphur level and inclusion shape control at the steelmaking stage, so the requirement has to be in the enquiry.
Why do sour lines often use a lower grade than sweet ones?
Hardness rises with strength while the 22 HRC limit stays fixed, so a lower grade with a thicker wall is easier to qualify, source and weld than a higher grade with a thinner one.
Request a Quote for Upstream Oil and Gas and Sour Service Projects
Send the hydrogen sulphide partial pressure, the in-situ pH, chloride content, temperature range and the standard edition. A requisition that says sour service without those inputs cannot be assessed against the standard it names.
