Two buyers ask for the same bar and want opposite things. A machine shop wants straightness, a predictable surface and chips that break, so the bar leaves the lathe to size without a second set-up. A forge wants soundness at the centre and enough reduction left in the section to close anything that is there, and does not care what the surface looks like. Round bars serve both across Oman and the GCC, and the enquiry has to say which. The product range sits alongside plates and sheets.
Bar by End Use
|
Requirement |
Bar for machining |
Bar for forging |
|---|---|---|
|
Surface condition |
Peeled, ground or bright drawn, so little stock is removed |
Hot rolled black is acceptable, since the surface is reworked |
|
Straightness |
Tight, because bar is fed through a collet or a bar feeder |
Loose, the bar is cut and heated |
|
Dimensional tolerance |
Close, h9 or better where the surface is left as supplied |
Commercial, the forging sets the final dimensions |
|
Centre soundness |
Matters on hollow and deep drilled parts |
Matters always, and ultrasonic examination is common on large sections |
|
Machinability |
A selection criterion, sometimes decided by a free machining grade |
Irrelevant |
|
Reduction ratio from the ingot or billet |
Not normally specified |
Frequently specified, because it governs how well centre defects have closed |
A third use sits between the two. Bar for fasteners and studs is usually supplied drawn to close tolerance in a condition suited to cold heading or thread rolling, and the condition is as much part of the specification as the grade.
Forms and Supply
- Forms: round bar, bright bar, forging stock, cut lengths and billets
- Condition: hot rolled, annealed, pickled, peeled, ground, drawn or forged
- Ends: sawn or sheared, with saw cut normal on alloy grades
- Lengths: random or cut to length. For sea freight into Sohar, Duqm, Salalah, Jebel Ali or Dammam, 5.8 m and 11.8 m lengths fit 20 ft and 40 ft containers
Sizes are supplied to specification. Send the grade, diameter, condition, tolerance, length and quantity, with the end use.
Where Round Bar Is Used in the GCC
- Valve stems, shafts, pump components and machined parts in oil and gas service
- Fasteners, studs and bolting for piping and structural work
- Forged fittings, flanges and valve bodies made from bar stock
- Heat exchanger and furnace components in refinery and petrochemical plants
- Pump and valve internals in desalination and water treatment service
Sour Service and Storage
Under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, bar used for pressure containing or pressure controlling parts is covered like any other product form. Carbon and low-alloy steel needs a hardness limit of 22 HRC with an accepted heat treatment condition; stainless, duplex and nickel alloys fall under Part 3 with environmental limits by alloy. The cold worked condition is the point to watch on bar, because so much of it is supplied drawn or ground, and that condition is assessed separately from annealed.
On storage, bar stacked outdoors in Gulf conditions collects water in the gaps between bars, and bright and ground bar loses its finish quickly to coastal chloride. Store under cover where the surface condition is part of what was paid for, and keep stainless and alloy bar off carbon steel racking.
Round Bars: Price Factors
Each enquiry is priced on its own, because grade, class and testing scope move the figure more than quantity does. What counts:
- Grade and the alloying elements it carries
- Size, pressure class, facing and bore
- Schedule or wall the item is made to
- Production route, forged or formed from pipe or plate
- Supplementary testing and inspection scope
- Order quantity and availability
- Certificate level and witness requirements
- Delivery terms and port of discharge
Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
What to send for a quotation:
item type, material grade and standard, size, pressure class, facing, schedule or wall, quantity, testing, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.
Certification, Traceability and PMI
Material comes with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. Check that the heat number on the certificate matches the marking on the item itself, and that the heat treatment condition is stated, and the condition, hot rolled, annealed, peeled or drawn. Positive material identification confirms the grade before anything is welded in. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.
Delivery and Handling
Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Fittings ship bundled or crated with bevel protection; flanges ship with face and ring groove protection, since a scored face leaks whatever the gasket. In coastal Oman, salt deposits build up on anything left in the open, so a rinse and a dry before fitting up is worth the time.

Round Bars FAQ
What is the difference between bar for machining and bar for forging?
Machining bar is judged on straightness, surface and tolerance so little stock is removed. Forging bar is judged on centre soundness and reduction ratio, and its surface is reworked anyway.
Why does centre soundness matter on large diameter bar?
Solidification defects concentrate at the centre of a cast section and are closed by hot working in proportion to the reduction. A large bar has had less reduction than a small one from the same billet.
What does peeled bar mean?
The outer layer has been turned off, leaving a sound surface and closer tolerance than hot rolled black bar, which suits machining where little stock will be removed.
Does the supply condition affect sour service qualification?
Yes. Cold work raises hardness, and NACE MR0175 treats cold worked material differently from annealed, so a bright drawn bar may not qualify where the same grade annealed would.
Which tests are usual on heavy bar?
Ultrasonic examination for centre soundness and macro etch for centre segregation, alongside the standard tensile and hardness testing.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the grade, diameter, condition, tolerance, length, quantity, end use, testing requirements, certification, inspection and destination port.
Request a Quote for Round Bars
Send the grade, diameter and condition with the end use, machining, forging or fasteners. Bar quoted without that is quoted on the commercial condition, which suits one of the three and wastes money on the other two.
