When it comes to frequently asked questions, it is clear that they do not relate to the content of the catalogue. Instead, the questions are about ambiguities in the order, as is the case with the necessity of class for a grade, the question of whether the schedule can be a wall, or the type of certificate needed to ask for. This pipe supplier FAQ is grouped that way, and each answer links to the guide that covers it properly on theresources page.
Sizes, Schedules and Dimensions
Is NPS a measurement?
No. NPS 2 pipe has an outside diameter of 60.3 mm, not 2 inches. From NPS 14 upward the outside diameter equals the nominal size in inches, but below that it does not.
Does changing schedule change the outside diameter?
No. For a given NPS the outside diameter is fixed, so changing schedule changes the bore and the flow area while everything still bolts together.
Is STD the same as Schedule 40?
Only up to NPS 10. From NPS 12 upward STD is a constant 9.53 mm, so at NPS 16 STD gives 9.53 mm against 12.70 mm for Sch 40. XS equals Sch 80 only up to NPS 8.
Are 10S and Sch 10 the same?
Not across the range. The S series under ASME B36.19M is a parallel designation for stainless and alloy pipe. Full detail in thepipe schedule guide.
Does pipe have a pressure class?
No. A flange has a class because its geometry is standardised; pipe capacity is calculated from wall, grade and design temperature. See thepipe pressure rating chart.
Quick Answers FAQ
Is NPS a measurement?
No. NPS 2 pipe has an outside diameter of 60.3 mm. From NPS 14 upward the outside diameter equals the nominal size in inches, but below that it does not.
What is the difference between EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2?
Who validates the certificate. A 3.1 is certified by the manufacturer's independent inspection department; a 3.2 is also validated by an independent inspector or the purchaser's representative.
When does a service become sour?
At a hydrogen sulphide partial pressure of 0.3 kPa, equal to 0.05 psi. Below that threshold ISO 15156 does not apply.
Can a higher grade be substituted on a sour line?
It makes qualification harder, because hardness rises with strength while the sour hardness limit does not move.
What proves low temperature capability?
Only the impact test report with its test temperature, since A106 Gr B and A333 Gr 6 cannot be separated by chemistry or positive material identification.
Are lead times and stock published?
No. Neither has been confirmed for publication, and lead time is confirmed at quotation against the actual grade, size and quantity.

If the question is not here, send the line or the callout exactly as it appears on your drawing or requisition. A specific callout is answered faster than a general question, and the answer is usually worth more.
