X65 PSL1 and X65 PSL2 have the same specified minimum yield strength. The second is not a stronger pipe. The term PSL2 denotes a level of product specification which refers to a specific requirement. The requirement is essential since it prevents manufacturer from making decisions regarding PSL1 specification. Therefore, there is no question of determining which specification is superior to the other but rather what specification is required for the project being developed. The answer depends either on the fact that pipe in question is sour, cold, or subjected to girth welding process requiring specific chemical properties. Ranges are underAPI 5L line pipe.

The carbon equivalent row is the one that reaches the construction site. A pipeline contractor qualifies a girth welding procedure against a chemistry window, and PSL2's mandatory carbon equivalent is what makes that window predictable. On anX70 line it is the girth welds rather than the pipe body that need the closest control.
PSL1 and PSL2: Buyer Questions
Is PSL2 a stronger pipe than PSL1?
No. X65 PSL1 and X65 PSL2 have the same specified minimum yield strength. PSL2 is a set of mandatory requirements that close off choices PSL1 leaves open and generate the supporting evidence.
What do the N, Q and M suffixes mean?
Delivery condition: N is normalised or normalising rolled, Q is quenched and tempered, M is thermomechanically rolled or formed. They are not interchangeable.
What does the S suffix mean?
Sour service qualification under Annex H. An X65QS is sour qualified and an X65Q is not, and the two are indistinguishable except by the stencil.
Why does carbon equivalent matter to a buyer?
Because a pipeline contractor qualifies the girth welding procedure against a chemistry window, and PSL2's mandatory carbon equivalent is what makes that window predictable.
Does PSL2 sour pipe make the whole line sour qualified?
No. The pipe arrives qualified, but A694 flanges, MSS SP-75 fittings and bolting need sour requirements ordered as supplementary items.
Can HIC testing be added after the pipe is made?
No. HIC resistance comes from steelmaking cleanliness and inclusion shape control, so it has to be in the order rather than requested later.
Applying This to an Enquiry
Name the specification, the product specification level and the delivery condition suffix together. X65, X65Q and X65QS are three different purchases, and the difference is not visible on the pipe once it is on the ground.
