ASTM vs ASME Standards Guide

Buyers sometimes ask whether a component is ASTM or ASME, as though they were alternatives. They are not. The two entities perform diverse functions and one item is simultaneously responsible for both: flange is ASTM A105 for what is the type of steel and ASME B16.5 for what is its shape and pressure rating. By solving the ASTM vs ASME standards split issue, the uncertainty of the inquiry is significantly diminished as this clarifies which papers each missing information refers to. Ranges are underpipes and tubes andpipe fittings and flanges.

ASME, dimensional standards

Component dimensions and ratings

ASME B16.5, B16.9, B36.10M

ASME, construction codes

Rules for design and construction

ASME B31.3, ASME BPVC

A complete callout usually needs one from each column. "A105 flange" is half an order, because it does not say the class, the facing or the standard it is dimensioned to. "Class 300 raised face weld neck flange to ASME B16.5, material ASTM A105" is a complete one.

ASTM and ASME: Buyer Questions

Is a component ASTM or ASME?

Usually both. ASTM specifies what the material is and ASME specifies the dimensions and rating, so a flange is ASTM A105 for the steel and ASME B16.5 for the shape and class.

What does the SA prefix mean?

ASME BPVC Section II adopts many ASTM specifications with an SA prefix, so SA-106 corresponds to ASTM A106. The ASME adoption is what governs code construction work.

Are all piping components covered by ASME standards?

No. Several widely used items are governed by MSS standards instead, including SP-75 high yield fittings and SP-97 branch outlet fittings.

Why does the construction code affect material selection?

Because it sets allowable stress by temperature, joint efficiency, examination requirements and temperature limits by grade, so whether a grade may be used in a service is a code question.

Can an EN grade be substituted for an ASTM grade?

Not as a translation. Chemistry ranges, test temperatures and delivery conditions differ, so a substitution is a technical deviation that requires approval.

What makes a callout complete?

Material specification and grade with class or type, dimensional standard and size, pressure class and facing for flanged items, schedule or wall for pipe, and the certification level.

Applying This to an Enquiry

Write the callout with one reference from each family: the material specification, the dimensional standard, and the class or schedule. An enquiry missing any one of the three has to come back for clarification before it can be priced.
