Stainless Steel 409 Pipes and Tubes for Exhaust and Mild Service

409 is one of the few stainless grades bought for its cost rather than its appearance, since it will develop a light surface bloom outdoors while the section underneath stays sound for years. Looks and service life are separate questions here. Stainless steel pipes of grade 409 contain chromium in the amount of 11% together with stabilized titanium. They are resistant to oxidation as well as exhaust gas corrosion which makes them a low-priced alternative to austenitic grades. They are used on exhaust systems, flue ducting and mild-service equipment across Oman. Other grades are on the stainless steel pipes and tubes hub.

Where 409 Is Used

  • Exhaust systems, silencers and tailpipes on engines and generators
  • Flue and vent ducting at moderate temperature
  • Heat exchanger shells and casings in mild service
  • Agricultural and general fabrication where mild corrosion resistance is enough
  • Containers and enclosures exposed to weather rather than chemicals

For better appearance and corrosion resistance, 430 carries more chromium; for higher exhaust temperatures, 441 holds strength better.

What 409 Does and Does Not Promise

Expectation

Reality

Structural life in exhaust and mild service

Good; the chromium content resists oxidation and the section survives well

Bright, stain-free appearance outdoors

No; surface staining and light rust bloom are normal, especially in coastal air

Chloride resistance

Limited; 409 is not for marine or chloride-bearing process service

Weldability

Good, thanks to titanium stabilisation, though ferritic welds need care to avoid grain growth

Cost

Among the lowest of the stainless grades, with no nickel surcharge

Specify 409 where the job is to survive heat and mild corrosion at low cost. Where the item is on public view or exposed to salt spray, a higher-chromium ferritic or an austenitic grade is a better fit.

409 Corrosion Limits

409 resists oxidation and exhaust condensate well, but its chromium content is the lowest of the common stainless grades, so it stains in humid or coastal air and offers little resistance to chlorides or acids. It is not a sour service material. State your service conditions in the RFQ; requirements are confirmed at quotation.

409 Price Factors

Each enquiry is quoted individually, since alloy surcharges move week to week. What changes the figure:

  • Grade and alloy content
  • Product form, size and wall
  • Finish, cleaning and passivation
  • Supplementary tests and PMI
  • Order quantity against mill minimums
  • Stock or mill order
  • Certificate level and inspection scope
  • Delivery terms and destination port

Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.

What to send for a quotation:

grade, standard, seamless or welded, NPS or OD, schedule or wall, length, quantity, finish, testing, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.

Certification, PMI and Inspection

Material comes with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. For 409, review the chemistry, annealing details and mechanical results, and specify PMI so each item is verified before it goes into the line. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.

Handling 409 on Site

Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Pipe and tube arrive capped, and wrapped where the finish requires it. Store on timber or plastic, not on carbon steel, and use dedicated slings, brushes and grinding discs. Salt-laden coastal air leaves deposits on stored material, so a rinse before welding is worth the time.

Fittings and Related Grades

409 is used in power generation auxiliary equipment and general fabrication.

SS 409 FAQ

What is 409 stainless steel?

A titanium-stabilised ferritic stainless steel with about 11% chromium, used mainly for exhaust systems and mild-service fabrication.

Why does 409 rust on the surface?

Its chromium content is the lowest of the common stainless grades, so a light surface bloom is normal. The section beneath remains sound in its intended service.

Is 409 suitable for coastal exposure?

Not where appearance matters or chlorides are strong. A higher-chromium ferritic or an austenitic grade is a better choice.

Can 409 be welded?

Yes. Titanium stabilisation helps weld ductility, though ferritic welds need controlled heat input.

What is the EN equivalent of 409?

1.4512 (X2CrTi12).

What should I send for a quotation?

Send the grade, standard, form, OD and wall, length, quantity, finish, certification, inspection and destination port.

Request a Quote for Stainless Steel 409 Pipes and Tubes

Send the OD, wall, length and quantity, with the application described. Every enquiry is checked before the offer is prepared, so a job that really needs a higher-chromium grade is flagged at the start.
