Stainless Steel 441 Pipes and Tubes: Dual Stabilised Ferritic

Exhaust systems run hotter near the manifold than at the tailpipe, and 409 loses strength and weld toughness in that hot end, which is the gap 441 was developed to fill with titanium and niobium stabilisation together. While one stabiliser is unable to perform, the work of the two stabilisers can be achieved at a lower cost. Stainless steel 441 pipes and tubes can withstand high temperature strength and corrosion resistance compared to stainless steel 409, while offering cost savings from not using nickel in its production. They are used in exhaust and hot gas systems across Oman. Other grades are on the stainless steel pipes and tubes hub.

Where 441 Is Used

  • Hot-end exhaust components, manifolds and front pipes
  • Flue and hot gas ducting
  • Heat exchanger and cooler components in dry gas service
  • Automotive and generator exhaust fabrication
  • Applications needing better weld properties than 409

For cooler exhaust sections, 409 is more economical; where chlorides are present, 444 adds molybdenum.

Dual Stabilisation: Titanium and Niobium Together

Stabiliser

What it contributes

Titanium

Ties up carbon and nitrogen effectively, improving corrosion resistance after welding

Niobium

Raises strength at high temperature and improves weld toughness, and survives the welding arc

Both together

Better hot strength and weld ductility than a titanium-only grade such as 409

This is why 441 appears where a fabricated ferritic part has to survive higher temperature than 409 can manage, such as the section of an exhaust system nearest the engine. As a ferritic grade it remains nickel-free, so its price is far steadier than austenitic alternatives, and it is largely immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

441 Corrosion and Temperature Limits

441 resists oxidation and hot gas corrosion better than 409 and holds its properties after welding, but with no molybdenum it offers limited pitting resistance in chloride service. Like other ferritic grades it is largely immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking. It is not a sour service grade. State your service conditions in the RFQ; requirements are confirmed at quotation.

441 Price Factors

Each enquiry is quoted individually, since alloy surcharges move week to week. What changes the figure:

  • Grade and alloy content
  • Product form, size and wall
  • Finish, cleaning and passivation
  • Supplementary tests and PMI
  • Order quantity against mill minimums
  • Stock or mill order
  • Certificate level and inspection scope
  • Delivery terms and destination port

Quotations are available in USD, OMR, AED, SAR, QAR, KWD and BHD, on EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.

What to send for a quotation:

grade, standard, seamless or welded, NPS or OD, schedule or wall, length, quantity, finish, testing, certification, inspection, destination port and required date.

Certification, PMI and Inspection

Material comes with EN 10204 3.1 certificates as standard, and EN 10204 3.2 certificates on request. Inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency can be arranged; state your requirement in the RFQ. For 441, review the chemistry, annealing details and mechanical results, and specify PMI so each item is verified before it goes into the line. See the MTC and EN 10204 certification guide.

Handling 441 on Site

Lead time is confirmed at quotation. Pipe and tube arrive capped, and wrapped where the finish requires it. Store on timber or plastic, not on carbon steel, and use dedicated slings, brushes and grinding discs. Salt-laden coastal air leaves deposits on stored material, so a rinse before welding is worth the time.

Fittings and Related Grades

441 is used in exhaust and hot gas equipment across power generation sites and general fabrication.

SS 441 FAQ

What is 441 stainless steel?

A dual stabilised ferritic stainless steel with about 18% chromium, stabilised with both titanium and niobium.

Why is 441 used instead of 409?

It holds strength and weld toughness at higher temperatures, which suits the hot end of exhaust systems.

Is 441 magnetic?

Yes, like all ferritic stainless steels.

Does 441 resist chlorides?

Only modestly. It has no molybdenum, so 444 or an austenitic grade is better in chloride service.

What is the EN designation for 441?

1.4509 (X2CrTiNb18).

What should I send for a quotation?

Send the grade, standard, form, OD and wall, length, quantity, finish, certification, inspection and destination port.

Request a Quote for Stainless Steel 441 Pipes and Tubes

Send the OD, wall, length and quantity, with the operating temperature if the part is in exhaust or hot gas service. Every enquiry is checked before the offer is prepared, so the grade suits the hot end as well as the cold.
